Continuing Competency About The Program

The ARNNL has a mandate of public protection. The public has the right to expect that RNs demonstrate continuing competence throughout their careers. The Registered Nurses Act (2008) has given the regulatory body of the ARNNL authority to make regulations regarding continuing competence. Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is the last jurisdiction to develop a CCP for registered nurses.
The ARNNL’s continuing competence program focuses on promoting the maintenance and acquirement of the competence of registered nurses throughout their careers. Competence is continually maintained and acquired through reflective practice, lifelong learning and integration of learning into nursing practice.
On an annual basis, registered nurses who wish to continue to practice are required to renew their registration with the ARNNL. To be eligible for registration renewal, all registered nurses must now declare they have completed the ARNNL’s Continuing Competence Program.
Remember to keep your continuing competence documentation for two years for auditing purposes.
